Mental Health Services for Kids

Mental health affects how children think, feel, and behave on the inside and outside. Early diagnosis and treatment can improve a child's health, help them avoid future problems, and lead to a better quality of life.

Childhood mental disorders include depression, anxiety, conduct disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and eating disorders. These disorders can begin as early as infancy and may continue throughout a child's life, affecting their social and emotional development.

It is important for children to have access to mental health services that are trauma informed and provide support throughout the lifespan. It is also crucial for these services to involve children and their families in the treatment process.

If a child is experiencing symptoms of a mental illness and has a history of trauma, they should be given access to mental health services as soon as possible. Services at Meridian HealthCare can prevent symptoms from worsening and enable children to have successful lives, while helping them learn coping skills and develop resilience.

Behavioral health service referrals can be made by a family's pediatrician, a general hospital, a freestanding psychiatric hospital, or a State Children?s Psychiatric Center. To make a referral, a doctor should ask the patient?s medical and social histories, standardized tests, school reports, and behavior observations.

Home-Based Services: These services are available to families of children who have mental health needs and are considered essential for their child?s well-being. They provide intensive, personalized care in a child?s own home, or in a community setting. These services can be used to prevent placement in a residential setting for youth with mental health needs, while still providing a range of other critical services.

Crisis Residential Services: These short-term, out of home placements are intended to provide an alternative to inpatient psychiatric care for youth who experience a sudden mental health crisis. A residential crisis service provider will partner with you and education services to ensure that your child receives appropriate school services while they are receiving mental health care.

Independent Living Services: These services are available to young people who are at risk of being placed in a residential setting for their mental health needs, or who need support to live independently. They provide intensive, personalized care in supervised, secure, and comfortable settings to ensure that young people are safe and secure while they receive treatment and social support services.

Addiction  services are available to youth ages 16 and older who have mental health needs, including a history of abuse or neglect. They provide comprehensive treatment and support services, including therapy, medication management, specialized socialization, and a safe place to live.

They are often funded by Medicaid, but many private and public insurance plans cover the costs of these services as well. In addition, there are a number of grants and donations available to help fund these services in your community.

Specialist CYPMHS: These NHS mental health services focus on the needs of children and young people and their families, with a specialist team of trained professionals who work directly with them to provide support.
